Cotton coveralls vs. ventilated coveralls: which is more resistant to bites?

The beekeeping suit is the most important piece of protective clothing for beekeeping . The two main models are the cotton suit and the 3-layer ventilated suit . Both serve to protect against stings, but offer different benefits.

Cotton suit: maximum protection, less comfort

The cotton beekeeping suit is made of thick fabric, often mixed with polyester.

Advantages:

  • Effectively blocks stingers
  • High durability over time
  • Ideal for cool climates and aggressive bees
  • Also available in plus sizes

Disadvantages:

  • Retains heat
  • It's heavier to wear
  • It offers little ventilation

Ventilated suit: breathable but more delicate

The ventilated beekeeping suit is made up of three breathable layers, designed to allow air to pass through and block stings.

Advantages:

  • Excellent breathability
  • Perfect for summer and warm climates
  • Available in versions with integrated hood or removable visor
  • Ideal models for summer beekeeping clothing

Disadvantages:

  • Less protection from aggressive bees
  • More delicate structure and subject to wear
  • Slightly higher price

Comparison table: protection and comfort

Model Bite protection Thermal comfort Recommended use
350g cotton tracksuit 🔒🔒🔒🔒🔒 🔥🔥 Cool climates, aggressive bees
3-layer ventilated suit 🔒🔒🔒🔒 ❄️❄️❄️❄️ Summer, hot climates

When to choose cotton tracksuits?

  • Aggressive bees or strong hives
  • Spring/Autumn
  • Long and close inspections

When is a ventilated suit best?

  • Hot days or Mediterranean climate
  • Summer beekeeping
  • Prolonged work under the sun

Average lifespan of suits

Type of suit Estimated duration Maintenance
Cotton 3–5 years High
Ventilated 2–4 years Average
Summer mesh 1–2 years High

Final answer

Cotton suits offer better protection from stings , especially those with a thickness of 350g or more. However, ventilated suits provide maximum thermal comfort and remain an excellent choice for experienced beekeepers in the warmer months.

Many professional beekeepers alternate models based on the season, the breed of bees, and the length of the work to be done.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularized in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humor and the like).
